TUTORIAL 3 - THE TRAY

The Tray

In this weeks tutorial we were required to make a tray using a Hammer forming technique.

Russell thoroughly explained the process we will be undertaking when forming the tray. We were required to find a partner that we haven't spoken to in the lab. I partnered with Eddie Song who is currently studying Architecture. Our goal was to ensure our trays matched as best as they can and ensure no gaps are shown.

We then stationed with Martin who provided a template using the laser cutting machine to help mark out our tray and bucks. Once me and Eddie received the templates, we cut out aluminium strip and ensured we had 2 pieces each. The template included six different diameter sizes ranging from 30mm - 80mm, we chose to use the 50mm diameter.

After we decided the radius me and Eddie collected out two pieces of timber and traced the diameter onto each corner, and sanded it out. Next we placed our aluminium sheets (220mm in the long dimension) in-between our two timber pieces and clamped the timber pieces together and began to slowly hammer the excess material onto the timber. Any excess material on the corners were trimmed using a tinsnips.

Once we were happy with our tray, we removed the timber by drilling two nails into the timber and pulling it out. Finally to allow for a greater finish we filed the edges and sanded it.
